Roger Calhoun

Arizona native Roger Calhoun first discovered ceramics in high school in the early 80s and has had his hands in clay ever since. After graduating, he honed his skills working in production pottery houses across the southwest and in New York before returning to Arizona to start his own business in 1992.​

After a few years of experimenting with different styles, Roger found his calling in alternative firing techniques like raku, horsehair, and saggar. These techniques are fast-paced and difficult to control, forcing the artist to let go of their expectations and embrace the chaos of the process. Roger has always loved the serendipitous nature of raku and horsehair firing. “I call raku a fire dance because the artist has to be on top of all the elements involved- fire, correct temperature and proper reduction. I don't know what the finished piece will look like until I open the reduction chamber and see.”

Roger is known for combining and layering multiple glazes to produce vibrant textures and effects. His work can be seen in galleries and fine art shows across the southwest.
